Area of expertise

Odense University Hospital is a tertiary referral centre for children with congenital gastrointestinal malformations, complex and rare cases with gastrointestinal diseases including inflammatory bowel disease. The hospital covers a population on approximately 3,75 mill. inhabitants.

The national health authorities have approved the hospital as a highly specialized hospital for paediatric surgery. This includes also adults previous treated for GI-malformations and other rare complex GI conditions.

The unit of paediatric surgery has 3 senior consultants all licensed in the subspecialty of paediatric surgery by the Danish Surgical Society. In addition 3 younger consultants specialized in general surgery are currently under training. The three senior consultants at a 24/7 bases cover the acute care all the year round. This is also the case with the anaesthesiologist (5 senior consultants) and with the intensivists (5 senor consultants). The surgeons and the anæsthesiologists/intensivits have a close collaboration with the paediatricians and neonatologists. These entire specialists are also on call 24/7.

All children are referred to specialized paediatric units (6 different departments including a neonatal unit) all staffed with specialized nurses. Those neonatal cases or other patients that need ventilator treatment or intensive care are referred to a specialized paediatric intensive care unit.

After discharge all patients are offered a follow-up programme specific for the child and the disease/malformation. This is in cooperation with the regional paediatric departments as a secondary follow-up. Specially educated and trained nurses, who also are responsible for the stoma care, follow patients with bowel dysfunction.

The transition to adult care is coordinated through our department, and the highly specialized treatment takes place at the surgical department A or the department of medical gastroenterology.

There are specialized MD-groups for care of patients with short bowel syndrome, hepatic failure and post transplantation. Small bowel transplantation is in cooperation with Birmingham University Hospital and liver transplantation in cooperation with the National Hospital (Rigshospitalet) in Copenhagen.
