The Department of Paediatric Surgery was founded in 1959 at Rigshospitalet and is now a division of Surgical Clinic C. It is a tertiary paediatric surgical department covering all Denmark, Greenland and Faroe Islands for selected cases and the department has a regional catchment area of approximately 2 million inhabitants. The 7 pediatric surgeons perform a wide variety of surgical procedures, including neonatal surgery, abdominal and thoracic surgery, minimally invasive surgery including robotics, oncologic surgery, liver transplant surgery, abdominal trauma surgery and urological surgery. Children receive coordinated care tailored to their condition both before and after surgery. There are 1800 operative cases per year whereof half of them as day care surgery. The surgical ward has 15 beds and there are 7000 outpatient visits per year. The primary house on-call is covered by fellows in specialist surgical training and the department has fellowships in Paediatric Surgery and Paediatric Urology. There is a close collaboration with neonatology, paediatric anesthesiology, paediatric sub-specialties and paediatric diagnostic imaging. All academic staff members are involved in clinical research. The research programs are under responsibility of the professor and chair of Paediatric Surgery.
